Neurotoxins are prescription medications that are injected into muscles to relax, soften, and improve the look of fine lines and wrinkles. Some brands you may have heard of are Xeomin, Botox, and Dysport. These all work in a similar manner, but their chemical makeups are different. At our office, we prefer to use Xeomin because it is the purest of the three. The manufacturer has removed unnecessary proteins from Xeomin’s makeup so it is the least likely to cause tolerance. When you are exposed to the unnecessary proteins, your immune system builds antibodies that break down the medication sooner than it should. We offer Xeomin and Botox at The Skin Refinery.
Neurotoxins are great for people who are concerned with wrinkles on their forehead, frown lines, crows feet, chin dimpling, and mouth wrinkles. It can be used to create symmetry, give the corners of the mouth a lift, decrease the amount of gum that shows with a smile (aka the gummy smile), and smooth the bunny lines. This treatment pauses muscle movement for 3-4 months, essentially giving the skin time to rest and heal. People often wonder if having a neurotoxin treatment will make the wrinkles worse after the injectable wears off. The wrinkles will not come back worse after this treatment and, if anything, the skin should glow after having a rest for a few months.
